Heelstrike

October 11, 2009

Ah Bliss. This morning is one of the few Sunday mornings not trumpeted into existence by V8s, motorbikes, or car horns – the Melbourne Marathon is running along my street and if there were waves on the beach across the road, I would actually be able to hear them today. Instead i hear the occasional pattering of applause as well wishers encourage the first wave of runners along.

Curiously, I’m reminded of the month we lived in Bogotá, Colombia. Our apartment was at a frantically busy intersection in El Norté (Bogotá’s equivalent to Doncaster) and every day from 8am to 10am, and 4pm to 7pm were “toot o’clock”. When in a traffic jam, Colombians like to use their car/truck/bus horn, pretty much constantly and regardless of effect. But Sunday mornings were blissfully quiet, because ALL major roads in Bogotá are closed for ‘Cyclovia’ – family bicycle riding. If only Melbourne would introduce the same….

Today is the last day you can submit for the Walking in High Heels competition! Good luck and winner announced tomorrow.
